Description

QT S Hand Carved Cheppu Along the stories of Manjushree, comes a story of this interesting mythical creature called Cheppu. When Manjushree cut open a gorge of nepa valley(Kathmandu, Nepal) to let out the water, all the creatures in it were compelled to leave, except Cheppu, who was the protector of the lake. Manjushree commanded him to leave, but Chhepu agreed to do so only if he did not look at him. He promised, but was so curious about this creature that he couldn’t resist looking at him and started sketching him. He could only draw his head, when Chhepu realized Manjushree’s deception, and immediately disappeared under the ground to never return back. Hence, as a respect towards Chhepu, the protector, he is often found in the arts of New?, especially on the tops of any New? temple doorways, with only his head drawn. Chhepu is also believed to be the brother of other mythical creatures, Garuda and Hitimanga.
